Some of these agencies have offices in multiple cities. If you don't see your town listed, call down the list and ask the agency if they provide energy assistance in your part of Iowa.
Many times, you can call an office near you and ask them to email you an Iowa energy assistance application. Whether you have to go in person, or can fill it out at home/online, here is what you'll need:
- Proof of income for everyone 19 and older. If you have a job, bring 3 months' worth of pay stubs or your previous year's tax return. If you get SSI, VA assistance, or live off a pension or Unemployment, bring your most recent 3 months' pay stubs. If you are self-employed, you'll need your tax return from the previous year. If you receive FIP, bring your notice of decision from DHS.
- Social Security cards for everyone in the house
- Recent heat, electricity and phone bills
If someone in your home is age 60 or over, or has a documented disability, you can apply anywhere from Oct 3 to April 30. Other families have to wait until Nov. 1st.
Turning in Your Home Energy Assistance Application From Home:
Oftentimes, agencies will take things by email or fax. If you can scan your documents into the computer or take high quality photographs, you may be able to mail or fax back your Iowa energy assistance application the same day you receive it. Every agency has different policies, but it never hurts to ask. If your electricity gets shut off before you get your application filed, they do not have to turn it back on without a payment. However, the agency you're working with may be able to help with that.
Certain agencies may ask you to make an appointment. With that appointment date and time, you should be able to call your energy company and ask for a 30 day hold on your account. This way, they cannot shut you off until they hear from the electric company that you have been denied for LIHEAP.
